Rampants close in on league title

Prior to Wednesday's Mideastern Conference showdown with Wilmington Hoggard, J.H. Rose volleyball coach Norm Cabacar challenged his team to seize momentum early in the match.
The Rampants did just that, dominating the opening set and then holding off Hoggard in a 25-11, 26-24, 25-23 win that has Rose in position to win its league. A victory by Hoggard could have forced a potential coin toss to determine the top seed from the Mideastern Conference for postseason play.
Now JHR (18-0) just needs one win in its final two matches to clinch the league title.
“I knew they had nothing to lose and they wanted to come in here and beat us because then we would be tied in the conference,” Cabacar said of Hoggard. “Our girls were inspired and they came out strong.”
After controlling Game 1, the Rampants were tested in the second set.
The visiting Vikings, who are JHR's best competition in conference play, had leads of 6-2, 8-4 and 18-12, but Caroline Douglas guided the Rampants' comeback.
Rose scored four straight points — led by three kills from Douglas — to cut the lead to 21-20, and J.H. Rose later took a 24-23 lead on a kill by Jamie DeRatt. After the two teams exchanged points, Emily Steele put away Hoggard with a kill and Rose had complete control.
“They pushed us and I was very pleased with the way the team responded after being down in the second set,” Cabacar said. “They came back one point at a time by staying focused and not panicking.”
Douglas, who finished with 16 kills, had four in Game 2 after JHR fell behind, 18-12.
Rose, which hosts Wilmington Laney today, outscored the Vikings 5-3 in the final game after it was tied at 20-20.
Steele finished with six kills and Julie Roeser had 20 assists. Ashton Lee had 12 digs.
