Vikings Battle with Jack Britt Bucs - Go Down Fighting in Five

It was a match that was a microcosm of the season.  A slow start (although the Vikes heart pulled out the first set) that was followed by stronger and stronger play.

However, this year, it was Jack Britt's 7 seniors that prevailed 15-13 in the fifth set in the second round of the playoffs.

Even though Hoggard outscored the Bucs in points 110-104, it wasn't to be. Even with a strong and loud Hoggard contingent in Fayetteville, home court advantage certainly rang true.

Regardless, great points, gutsy play, and hearts left out on the floor meant that Hoggard gave it all it had, and already is looking forward to next year.  It will be a great year for Hoggard Viking volleyball.  Congratulations on another year of fantastic and entertaining play.

Hoggard volleyball coach Ron Strickland has had few problems keeping his team loose this season.

The Vikings showed off their smiles as much as their hitting and serving in Saturday’s 25-12, 25-15, 25-11 sweep of Southeast Raleigh in the opening round of the NCHSAA 4A state tournament.

But with five sophomores and a freshman in the starting lineup and only two seniors on the roster, the veteran coach is working on getting his team focused under playoff pressure.

“That’s part of the reason we’ve brought some JV kids up,” Strickland said. “It’s a different beast when everything’s riding on it. You’ve just got to be a whole lot tougher mentally.”

Keeping focus Saturday could have been tough for the Vikings (16-7), who jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the opening set over the Bulldogs (9-11). They quickly took care of business, however, as Strickland was able to play everyone, a “luxury in the playoffs,” he said.

For the rest of the season, though, Hoggard’s few returning players will have to step up. Sophomore setter Ellen Tootoo doesn’t see that as a problem.

“Things are finally starting to fall into place,” she said. “We’re a young team, but we’ve come a long way because Coach Strick has pushed us.”

Hoggard travels to Mid-South champion Jack Britt (22-3) for the second round, with the match at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Buccaneers beat the Vikings in three close sets earlier this season, but Strickland said his team is a little different, and his middle hitters’ improvement could go a long way to reversing that result.

With a young team that returns virtually everyone for next season, many people might be looking ahead. The way the Vikings have played down the stretch, Tootoo said next year can wait until next year.

“We thought of that,” she said. “But we really feel this is going to be a year for us to go deep.”

Hoggard Beats New Hanover on Senior Night

Senior Night ceremonies spotlight 2 graduating seniors 

 

During the pre-warm up ceremony, Coach Strickland presented his graduating seniors with kind words and a gift.  Jamie Jarrell and Alyssa Campagna presented Maggie Sheets and Amanda White with flowers from the team, and Kelli Esinhart read a poem from 1 DS to her fellow senior back row players.

The Hoggard coaching staff also presented the 4 New Hanover seniors with flowers before the presentation to the Vikings seniors began.

Hoggard followed up by taking the match in 3 games and making it a memorable night for the seniors.

Prior to Wednesday's Mideastern Conference showdown with Wilmington Hoggard, J.H. Rose volleyball coach Norm Cabacar challenged his team to seize momentum early in the match.

The Rampants did just that, dominating the opening set and then holding off Hoggard in a 25-11, 26-24, 25-23 win that has Rose in position to win its league. A victory by Hoggard could have forced a potential coin toss to determine the top seed from the Mideastern Conference for postseason play.

Now JHR (18-0) just needs one win in its final two matches to clinch the league title.

“I knew they had nothing to lose and they wanted to come in here and beat us because then we would be tied in the conference,” Cabacar said of Hoggard. “Our girls were inspired and they came out strong.”
After controlling Game 1, the Rampants were tested in the second set.

The visiting Vikings, who are JHR's best competition in conference play, had leads of 6-2, 8-4 and 18-12, but Caroline Douglas guided the Rampants' comeback.

Rose scored four straight points — led by three kills from Douglas — to cut the lead to 21-20, and J.H. Rose later took a 24-23 lead on a kill by Jamie DeRatt. After the two teams exchanged points, Emily Steele put away Hoggard with a kill and Rose had complete control.

“They pushed us and I was very pleased with the way the team responded after being down in the second set,” Cabacar said. “They came back one point at a time by staying focused and not panicking.”
Douglas, who finished with 16 kills, had four in Game 2 after JHR fell behind, 18-12.

Rose, which hosts Wilmington Laney today, outscored the Vikings 5-3 in the final game after it was tied at 20-20.

Steele finished with six kills and Julie Roeser had 20 assists. Ashton Lee had 12 digs.

Hoggard travels to Greenville for Breast Cancer Fundraiser

  The HOGGARD Vikings showed great character Saturday during the volleyball matches that were the centerpiece of a Breast Cancer fundraiser sponsored by South Central HS in Winterville, NC.

Hoggard, JH Rose, DH Conley and South Central played 4 matches in the "big" gym, while 3 other schools also participated in the "small" gym on South Central's campus.

The first match started at 11 am, and Hoggard started off stronger than DH Conley in the first set, but once the DHC Vikings got settled, the match was pretty even, and the crowd was entertained with some great points, especially during the closely contested third set.

With just a short break, Hoggard got back on the court again with South Central.  After getting down 17-4, Hoggard picked it up and got well into double figures before South Central could close the first game out.  The burst of good play at the end of the first game continued into the second game, and Hoggard seemed to surprise South Central by tying the match at 1 set apiece. 

The match would take 5 sets to draw a South Central winning conclusion.  Again, in this match there were some excellent points that showed both teams playing and looking like well-oiled groups of experienced volleyball players. 

Way to play Hoggard!  Keep it going onto the playoffs!

Of Greenville Rose's seven matches this season, the Rampants have claimed 21 out of 23 games, with the last three coming at the expense of Hoggard on Thursday night as Rose won all three games and improved to 7-0.

Both teams showed stretches of dominance and disconnection in their first conference match of the season.

The first game proved why Rose is a perennial contender in the state. The hard-hitting Rampants often left the Vikings flailing helplessly at their powerful spikes on the way to a 25-16 win. Rose head coach Norman Cabacar said, "The whole team fundamentally took care of their position."

It appeared that the Rampants would cruise to a quick, two-game advantage as they built a commanding 23-12 lead in the second game. However, Hoggard didn't go down without a fight.

In a comeback highlighted by three aces from Hoggard outside hitter Jamie Jarrell, the Vikings climbed all the back to within one point at a 24-23. Two of the Rampants' serves didn't even clear the net, supplementing the Hoggard run.

"We had a very comfortable lead, and sometimes with this team, it has happened that they'll see a lead and get really relaxed," Cabacar said.

That was as close as they would get, though. Rose scored the next point to win the second game. Vikings head coach Ron Strickland said, "(Hoggard) started to see that when we were running our offense, we could play with them."

Despite trailing by two games, the Vikings raced out to an 18-12 lead. The success was short-lived, however, as they gave up 11 consecutive points to the Rampants. The match was capped off by Rose senior Ginny Howard's game-clinching kill after several volleys between the Mideastern Conference favorites.

"Both of these teams know that the road to the conference championship goes through each other," Strickland said. "I think realistically we're strong enough to play with them and maybe even beat them."

On Oct. 5, the Vikings will travel to the Rose Garden for a rematch.

Hoggard beats Pender 3-0 in Endowment Match

Alyssa Campagna had been in a slump since Hoggard's trip to Chapel Hill this past weekend for the Tiger Invitational. However, when she returned home for the Vikings' match against Pender – last year's 1A state champion – her luck turned around as Hoggard beat the Patriots in three games and Campagna lead the team with 17 kills.

"She started getting smart with the ball," said Hoggard's outside hitter Jamie Jarrell, who notched 16 kills. "Her first hit was a tip and that's what we've been working on for a while now. So, that really got us excited. Normally she just wails at the ball."

The remainder of the first game was dominated by Hoggard. The Vikings jumped out with a 5-1 lead and capitalized off of a dramatic backward hit by Jenna Baranowksi, which sailed from the edge of Pender's back line to the opposite end of the court and out of bounds.

The momentum switched during Game 2. The Patriots led by seven before Hoggard took a time out to regroup. Following the pause, the Vikings scored seven consecutive points.

Pender quickly roared back to regain the lead.

"It wasn't that we relaxed or anything like that," Hoggard coach Ron Strickland said. "My libero came out a little shaky in that match, and she's usually rock solid, and everybody kind of followed her. They're a good team and they capitalized on it."

Hoggard's Cassidy Stephenson served the ball and once it was volleyed back, she tapped it over the net and found a hole on the Pender side to end the comeback at 25-21.

"We stopped hitting the ball because Hoggard blocked us so good," Pender coach Ray Horton said. "If they play well and make a good play, we can still play good and not stop their good play."

Amanda White, who led the Vikings with 23 digs, served the game-clinching point of the match. It was volleyed high twice before being spiked back out of bounds by Pender's Jessica Sanabria.

"They don't want to lose to Pender and Pender doesn't want to lose to us. It's a good-hearted rivalry," Strickland said. "Because the girls all know each other, it means a lot emotionally, much more than it does in the X's and O's."

Vikes Split at the Tiger Invitational

The Tiger Invitational in Chapel Hill is always a good barometer and reality check to see where your team stands at the beginning of the year.  Until this year, the Invitational was a tournament, but this year, each team was guaranteed four matches, 1 on Friday and 3 on Saturday.

The Vikings started the pre-season scrimmage with a picture perfect match against the always strong Northwest Guilford squad from Greensboro, NC.  The girls played seemingly flawlessly as they put the Vikings from Guilford County away in 3 games.  Jamie Jarrell was named the match's MVP.

JTH vs East Chapel Hill - Saturday at 9 am
Then Saturday morning at 9 am came, and apparently toooo quickly!   Against East Chapel Hill, the Vikings went 5 games before winning the 5th set 15-13.  An especially exciting come from behind 5th set proved Hoggard could pull a win out even when not playing their best.  Alyssa Campagna was named the match's MVP.

JTH vs Chapel Hill - Saturday at 1 pm
Hoggard needed a better than flawless effort against Chapel Hill to get a game in this match, but they could only manage one of those against the very talented and experienced hosts Chapel Hill Tigers.  After looking a bit confused in the first set, the Vikings turned it around in the 2nd to win it 25-23.   That would be the only set Chapel Hill would lose in the Invitational, and matched last year's score against the Tigers.

Looking a bit tired after 9 sets in the first two matches, Hoggard played another 5 setter before losing to a hard hitting Durham Riverside team.

Vikings Start Scrimmage Season at Ashley Slam and Jack Britt

Every season Hoggard starts preparing for the regular season with pre-season scrimmages that allow the coaches to size up the team, the talent and how to make the parts work as a whole.  2010 is no different with an almost completely new team taking the court for the varsity Vikings.
